When Silva say the Smini Fly is their lightest weight head torch, they really mean it. At just 38.5g including the battery, it weighs less than your average energy bar. They've designed it as a backup torch for ultra runners, but it's actually a seriously capable headlamp in its own right with a max light output of 250 lumen, plus two reduced power modes and a red light for preserving night vision. The double-beam system combines a long-reach spot and close-range flood light, helping to maintain visual comfort and prevent tunnel vision. In terms of charge, it's your standard USB-C rechargeable battery with a 4-step charge level indicator and a lock function so it doesn't accidentally come on in your running vest. At max lumens you'll get an hour and a half out of it, but that goes up to 2.5 hours on 100-lumen medium mode and a whopping 20 hours if you're just using it on low output for reading in your tent. It goes without saying that it's water-resistant, and the minimalist 3mm elastic cord headband with single-buckle adjustment is surprisingly comfortable.

Its a bit of a clich to say, this brand needs no introduction, but sometimes it really doesnt. Like so many world-changing inventions, the Silva compass began as a problem that needed solving. Back in the day, your standard compass wobbled all over the shop, making it tricky and time-consuming to get a decent reading. That is, until 1933, when four Swedes invented a liquid-filled compass. The resistance from the fluid slowed and stabilised the needle, meaning you could nail a reliable bearing in seconds. Navigation was never the same again.
But iconic as the compasses are, theyre only one part of the Silva story.
